Places to visit

Wealthy from the revenues earned on tobacco and wine production once shipped from its riverside quay, the town has excellent shopping, a large market and a charming old town with lovely restaurants and outdoor cafes.

The charming, stunning and rich landscapes of the Dordogne region and its 'route des vins' are an amazing location in which to spend time relaxing with family and friends. There are activities for every age and every taste: golfing, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, canoeing and fishing in the Dordogne River, biking etc.

This is an unashamedly a region rich in foods and wine. Eating out is very good value, and children are positively encouraged. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the surrounding villages and we particularly like the restaurants and cafes which overlook the river in the old town. In fact if you look carefully you will find some real gems in Bergerac.

Although not often seen here in the UK, Bergerac wines are very palatable indeed. There are some deep, robust reds as well as surprisingly good whites and roses, which are especially enjoyable when served chilled. The main wine growing areas are south of the town and even if desert wines are not to your taste we strongly recommend that you visit the Monbazillac vineyards, if only for the beautiful chateau itself.

Golfing

Golf Club Château les Merles

Surrounding the Château, on the edge of the beautiful Liorac forest and the Bergerac vineyards, is a forty five acre estate which includes a three thousand meters, nine hole golf course par 35.

This challenging and compact golf course provides excellent training for players of all standards. There are water hazards, bunkers and greens which are renowned as the best in the area. Covered driving range, pitching area with practice bunker and separate putting greens are also all available.

The new club house has been rebuilt in line with the rest of the facilities.

Chateau Des Vigiers

The Château des Vigiers' is a seventeenth century chateau hotel with a magnificent 18 hole surrounding it, along with several acres of the chateaus private vineyards.

Château des Vigiers' course is maintained as a holiday course with short rough, promoting quick play and accessibility for higher handicaps. However, the greens are frequently lightning fast and prove a test for any golfer. With strategic pin positions and longer rough, the course can be turned into a challenge for the best golfer. We highly recommend it.
